TUTORIAL - Adjusting Lace Band Height for Haru Knickers
A quick tutorial for the Haru Knickers about using a stretch lace that is SHORTER or TALLER than the 6” (approx 15 cm) the pattern was designed for. While this is common width for stretch galloon lace, that lace that matches your project PERFECTLY may be a different width. Thankfully, this is a pretty easy pattern alteration involving straight lines.
Below, we show 2 main methods to address lace that is either too wide or too narrow.
ONE SCALLOPED EDGE
This method involves the use of elastic at the top edge and scallops at the bottom. Best used when a narrower stretch galloon lace is desired. If using lingerie elastic, add the width of your preferred elastic as seam allowance. If using fold over elastic, no change is required.
Once your pattern alteration is finished, apply fold over elastic using a zig zag stitch or if using lingerie elastic, apply in the same manner as the main body/gusset as described in the Instructions. Don’t forget to add elastic allowance!
Bonus: If your stretch lace is, say 11” (approx 28 cm), you can simply cut the lace in half for a 5” (12.7 cm) tall lace band.
TWO SCALLOPED EDGES
This method involves having a horizontal seam throughout the band and is ideally used with a stretch stitch. Best when a narrower OR wider stretch galloon lace is desired.
Once your pattern alteration is finished, determine where you want the seam (half, a third, two-thirds, etc) and draw a line. Add seam allowance and you’ll have 2 pattern pieces for the lace band. Be sure to mark which edge should have the scalloped lace edge.
